Fort Bend County’s Interim Judge Controversy Remains Unresolved

The ongoing legal dispute surrounding the controversial appointment of interim Fort Bend County Judge Daniel Wong remains unresolved, despite many residents believing the matter should be settled quickly.

On Thursday, July 23, visiting Galveston County Judge Jeth Jones returned to Fort Bend County District Court, where attorneys for the parties involved presented arguments regarding Wong’s appointment.

The attorney representing the resident who filed the original civil lawsuit argued that Wong’s appointment is invalid because the court lacked jurisdiction over the underlying case from the beginning. Wong’s attorneys argued that Fort Bend County Commissioners Court later approved his appointment through the end of the year after he was sworn in.

After hearing arguments from both sides, Judge Jones did not issue a ruling and stated he would review the legal issues and issue a decision at a later date.

No timeline was provided.

The controversy began on April 10, when Judge Jones appointed Wong to temporarily perform the duties of County Judge following the suspension of former County Judge KP George. After the lawsuit against George was dismissed, questions emerged about whether Wong’s appointment remained legally valid.

Fort Bend County Attorney Bridgette Smith-Lawson has publicly stated that Wong’s temporary appointment expired on June 17 following the dismissal of the civil lawsuit.

Commissioners Grady Prestage (Precinct 2) and Dexter L. McCoy (Precinct 4) have stopped attending Commissioners Court meetings while Wong continues to participate in county operations, citing concerns over the legality and potential risks associated with his continued involvement.

Many residents remain frustrated and confused about why the matter has not been resolved. Legal questions continue over whether actions taken during Commissioners Court meetings involving Wong could face challenges if a court determines he did not have legal authority to serve.

For now, Fort Bend County waits for a ruling.
